with CG Artist & Motion Designer Eric Carlsen

Hello and Welcome!

My name is Eric Carlsen and I have been having a blast creating computer graphics since the turn of the century, and have been doing so professionally for more than a decade. I work full-time at a Boston-based production company where I create animations and graphics for films, animated shorts, and interactive programs. I also run this site and the CG Chatter Podcast, where I interview other CG Artists and chat about the art, business, and lifestyle of creating computer graphics.

I have a passion for teaching and helping others develop their own creative and technical abilities, and am thrilled to offer one-on-one online computer graphics tutoring through CG Chatter.

  • Animation & Motion Graphics
  • 3D Modeling, Animation, Texturing, & Rendering

Student Testimonials

“I enjoyed the fact that the teaching was in real-time. It made it real easy for Q&A. It’s obvious that Eric has great knowledge in the subject but more importantly, he was really articulate, which made it easy to understand and follow the lesson.” ―Michael J.

“Eric is very friendly and has a positive personality. He has great communication skills and uses a clear tone while teaching. I found him very easy to work with. He is very knowledgeable of the subject matter.” ―Witchuda C.

“Eric has an excellent grasp of the subject of After Effects. The online teaching format worked well, Eric was very open and forthcoming with his knowledge.” ―Michelle J.

“I really enjoy the online format because it gives me the opportunity to ask questions and get an instant response…I picked up some good tricks to help me with my compositing.” ―Rick M.

“As a professional editor I don’t always have the time to sharpen my skills in After Effects and Photoshop while trying to get other work done. But because they are such an integral part of the work I do, it is professionally important to stay fresh. You can find a tutorial video to almost any question on the internet now, but a one-on-one hour with Eric answered many of my small, head-scratcher questions and left me with good ideas about how to approach my archival and graphics challenges. Eric’s easy manner is perfectly suited for one-on one training and we quickly covered both simple and more complex techniques. It was time well spent.” -Tim R.

The online tutoring sessions are tailored to you as an individual, based on your current experience level and what you are hoping to learn and focus on. We can review your work or latest projects, dive into new areas of computer graphics that you want to learn about, cover broad concepts, dig into nitty-gritty technical details – the experience will be completely customized for your situation.

For recurring sessions, I can assign homework designed to help grow your abilities and then review it with you the next time we meet.

The cost is $50 per one-hour session, due prior to meeting.

What Will You Need?

First of all, absolutely NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! I have taught computer graphics to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, from young students who are a long way from college and work, to current students, to retired people that simply want to learn something new, to people in the midst of their careers, both those working in computer graphics and in completely unrelated fields. Learning is for everyone, and I’m happy to help be a part of your own journey, no matter who you are. The most important thing is to have a desire to learn and grow in the exciting world of computer graphics.

You will need a working copy of the software we will be using, installed and running prior to the session. You can get 30-day trials to the Adobe software or simply pay for one month, and the same goes for Autodesk Maya and many other software packages. If you are a student, you can often get special educational pricing, or even a free temporary license. Ask your school or consult the software manufacturer to find out more.

You will also need either a Google Hangouts or Skype account for the session. It is ideal to have a webcam so we can communicate more easily, though it is not required. We can share project files through Dropbox or Google Drive.

Group Tutoring

I am happy to work with classes and groups. This service can be helpful if you’re a teacher and want to offer a unique opportunity to your students, or if you lead a group that you feel would enjoy and benefit from computer graphics training and coaching. I will offer a quote for the group session(s) after discussing further with you.

Hear what Anthony Marquette, Director of the Pixels and Polygons School, had to say about the experience:

“Eric Carlsen is both a gifted artist and an exceptional teacher. With many years of experience under his belt, Eric’s knowledge of Motion Graphics is truly second to none. It’s been our pleasure to have him teach group sessions to our students on a wide range of topics. Our students and faculty have all gained valuable knowledge through learning Eric’s workflows and signature techniques in applications such as Autodesk Maya and Adobe After Effects. He’s an engaging instructor who demonstrates patience and creativity in every lesson. I would highly recommend Eric as a guest lecturer in any classroom.”
