CG Chatter 007: 3D Character Animator Gordana Fersini

Welcome to the CG Chatter Podcast episode #7! (Or should I say…007?) In this episode I chat with the awesome Gordana Fersini, 3D Character Animator. Gordana has worked on a range of exciting and well-known titles including Ice Age 3, Horton Hears a Who, and the title sequence for TNT’s The Company. She digs into her process, her transition from economics into animation (similar to Mike Taylor’s switch in episode 2), and what it’s like working at a big studio as well as from home. Also she had some wise words on the unpredictable nature of life, which I think all the digital animators out there should enjoy: “You can control your keyframes, but not life.”

Highlights include:

  • Gordana’s childhood in Italy and early interest in art
  • Transitioning from studying economics to studying art
  • Her start in animation and 3D during design school
  • Gordana’s love of storytelling and what drew her to 3D animation
  • The ties between acting and animation
  • Making believable and relatable animations
  • Gordana’s animation workflow & search tips for gathering reference
  • Animating Chester Cheetah, and working with live footage
  • Gordana’s 3D animation work on the title sequence for TNT’s The Company (embedded at the end of this post)
  • Her studies at Animation Mentor
  • Importance of stepping away from your work
  • Challenges vs. benefits of working from home
  • What it’s like working at a big studio, and what a “sweat box” is (I was wrong about this one!)
  • The value of critiques
  • Gordana’s advice for aspiring 3D character animators
